We just returned from a week at the Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach and loved it so much that we are already planning our return trip. We first visited this resort on a timeshare tour in 2002. We were impressed with the concept of the resort at that time, but it was maybe 25% complete. We told ourselves we would return some day when it was built out.
Over the past few years we've watched the reviews for this resort and wondered what our experience would be because of the range of reactions to the property. I can say from our experience that we LOVE Sunset Beach.
PB Sunset Beach is not for the party crowd that bounces between Squid Roe, Cabo Wabo and the Giggling Marlin. It lies on the Pacific side just north of the Pedregal development (where Oprah, Sly, Sammy, etc. have homes). You cannot swim in the Pacific at Sunset Beach because of the tremendous currents, but just sitting on our patio enjoying the crashing waves was enough ocean for us.
The resort is nestled into a mountainside which cascades down to the beach. Each hacienda-style building is tiered so that no view is blocked. We had a first floor room and still had a great view of the ocean. Winding trails around the resort are navigated by countless golfcarts which transport you from the awesome main pool by the beach to the lobby at the top - and all points in between. The carts run continuously and you never wait more than 5 minutes to get wherever you want to go.
The main pool was crowded, but not unreasonable. We were able to find lounge chairs every day, and even a cabana on different occasions. There is great poolside service and a swim-up bar at the pool as well. There are two other pool areas further up the resort which were much less crowded. One has poolside menu service and another swim-up bar. All the pools are gorgeous, with multiple levels, spas, children's pools, etc.
Our room was a 2 bedroom Presidential Suite which can sleep 8. The master bedroom has a king bed and sitting area. The large bathroom includes a jacuzzi tub. The other bedroom has 2 queen beds. The living area is large with a nice kitchen. The rooms are appointed beautifully with ceramic tile, granite countertops, and cherry cabinetry. The suite was probably close to 1700 sf. if you include the awesome 40'x12' patio.
Our only recommendation to make the trip better is to know what you are getting into with the resort's timeshare presentation. They'll ask you immediately upon arrival if you will see their 90 minute presentation, and offer you incentives. We received $300 in meal/beverage credits, useable at any of the Pueblo Bonito resorts. If you are polite and tell them you are not interested, or mention to them that you are familiar with the resale market, they tend to leave you alone.
We had a great experience at this resort. The food at the restaurants was not the best, but acceptable. The poolside tapas (appetizer type foods) were excellent. There is a free hourly shuttle into town which takes you to their other resort, the Rose'. We would also take a $10 cab ride into town to get us to the specific store or restaurant we wanted to get to.
If you're looking for a vacation destination which provides the opportunity for true relaxation, this is a great choice.
