I don't know how to start describing the place, except that, the many of the staff were abrupt to the point of rudeness, our room had crumbling walls, there was no air conditioning, no hot or cold water for 3 days of our stay. Fortunately we had a car so were able to get away from the place every day. The marina was deserted and derilect, rubbish everywere. The beach was fabulous, marred by the staff who were more intent with amusing themselves, hawkers, and the incessent loud music that spoiled the occasion.

The tennis courts were unusable - not that we play tennis but they were an eyesore

Apart from that we had a wonderful week, and work appeared to be in progress to improve the resort, which could be idyllic

After a rather long and expensive cab ride from the pier, we arrived at the Xanadu. We were quickly shuffled into the main lobby and things were looking good. A nice entrance with an assortment of plush lounge furniture made Xanadu look like like it was going to be a nice place to stay. After checking in and enduring an hour long sales pitch for all the stuff they were promising us for the weekend, we finally got up to our room.

The door to the room was sticky and had to be forced open. After getting in the living area was virtually barren and we were surrounded by sliding glass doors that couldn't be closed. There were holes in the wall and paint was peeling from the ceiling and walls.

It was breezy to say the least, but unfortunately it was a warm breeze and without any fan or A/C in the room there really wasn't much we could do. The carpet was wet and smelled musty. There was mold in the bathrooms and a storage closet with holes all over the place.

One view was toward the water, and the other view was the charred remains of a wing that use to belong to the hotel. It wasn't pretty and you could still smell the smoke from the fire -- it would have been nice to have been apprised of this before making reservations. While we had outdoor balconies, the railings were broken and there wasn't any furniture to admire the view.

As others have noted, the cost of a cab ride into town was upwards of $15-$20 (each way) and was rather cost prohibitive. Since there was absolutely NOTHING to do at the Xanadu, we had to go into town for everything. The hotel had promised a free bus ride into Port Lucaya, but the bus never arrived.

We didn't bother to spend a night in that hellhole -- we instead opted to switch hotels and enjoyed our stay very much at the Sheraton in Lucaya. The Xanadu staff were amicable about our abrupt departure and were understanding about our issues; unfortunately, there was nothing they could do. The hotel is a dump and needs significant rennovation before it can be a destination for any traveler.

We just came back from Freeport and while there were talked into looking at a vacation package at Xanadu. This resort is unbelievably run-down. I was stunned when I saw the website photos because the pictures do not represent the hotel I saw. The resort as a whole is depressing, with old rooms, broken concrete and wire fences. The tennis courts have not been kept up and have broken wire fences surrounding them. I doubt anyone could play on these. Also beware the vacation time share they try to sell. They did quite a hard sell and itseems a little sketchy.

My family has time share on Grand Bahama Island, Dundee Bay Villas, which is located within a 10 minute walk to the Xanadu Beach Resort and Marina. I have been to Grand Bahama Island 10 times or so and have been to the Xanadu a lot since its beach is the closest to our time share. I have been in the hotel, have seen its amenities, have ate at its reasturants and obvisously been to its beach many times. First of all, the Resort's beach is the worst on the island. A barbed wire fence separates the Resort's private beach from the public beach and the private beach isn't very big. There is often trash blowing around the beach and the Resort staff does not take the time to rake up the dead sea grass like other Resorts do. The hotel itself always seems to be in decay and in need of a bad paint job, (although they have recently made major renovations to the hotel) the staff is not the friendliest, and the reasturant's food is awful. One more thing, the hotel is pretty secluded and you need to take a cab to get to the spots on the island where there is nightlife, reasturants, shopping, golf courses, casinos, etc. and these cab rides can run anywhere from $10 - $20.

We do enjoy our time share and we are lucky that we get free transportation to go wherever we want on the island....so we don't always have to walk over to the Xanadu beach. I would suggest to anyone who is looking to stay on Grand Bahama Island that you look into the Resort of Our Lucaya which is made up of 3 hotels, 2 Sheratons and 1 Westin all next to one other. This resort is laid out on a beautiful stretch of beach, has awesome pools, great reasturants and amenities, a casino on site and across the street is a marina with a huge markeplace with shops and bars and nightly entertainment.

Just avoid staying at the Xanadu at all costs, no matter what deals they offer. I can understand how the spring breakers may like it because all they care about really is drinking and partying on the beach.

“Worst hotel EVER”

Xanadu Beach Resort and Marina

The Xanada was by far the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. Falling down buildings, smelly hallways, cockroaches in the rooms, an expensive cab ride away from Port Lucaya, and a rude, unhelpful staff all contributed to making this experience terrible. Their website is bogus and looks nothing like the actual resort!
