I had read all the positive and negative reviews before heading down and when all was said and done, the postive reviews are the ones that proved more true. Im not here to talk up the Xanadu, I just want to list the different aspects of this place so that tourists will know exactly what to expect from this place and not head down terrified as I was after searching this site. First of all, yes, the place was hit by hurricanes, and the view is not that great, however, the beachfront property more than makes up for it. The beach may not be filled with may people but the seclusion on this gorgeous beach is very peaceful. If your entire trip is built around playing tennis then yes, I would reccommend choosing another hotel, but I seriously doubt the tennis courts being destroyed really ruined anyones vacation. It is about 5 miles away from everything, however they offer a bus service which will take u back and fourth to the supermarkets and port lucaya, you just need to check the schedule. As far as the room goes, i did not see one bug, no flooding, and the towels were delivered every morning like clockwork. My room was beautiful, full living room, 2 bathrooms, large balcony, full kitchen. The staff could not have been any more friendly or helpful. True, the little pharmacy was closed for most of the time I was there, but when they were open they did not really have anything in there anyway, so it wasn't a big loss. Same thing goes for the restaurant in the hotel, you are better off catching the bus into port lucaya, there were 100 places to choose from to eat. If you do miss the bus taxi's do get expensive but we learned that the first 2 days and learned the bus schedule after that. My biggest problem with this hotel was the fact that we had to make our own ice due to neither of the 3 -----

I am still baffled as to how this hotel continues to operate and actually succeed in attracting tourists. My family and I stayed here from the 23rd of December until the 30th and received quite possibly the worst service we could have ever imagined. The hotel staff was rude and evasive, to the extent that we had to call in for towels 3 times before I had to physically walk down to the concierge desk and get them myself. The rooms were tolerable at best, and this is after we received a slight upgrade after our original room flooded the third night we were there. The entire property had been devastated by the hurricanes, from the miserable tennis courts to the nonexistent bars by the pool and beach. The beach was peaceful, although there were never more than 10 people there at any given time, and this included the dying dog that paraded the beach daily. The hotel was so isolated from everything else on the island that it was impossible to find anything to eat between the hours of 12-6, since the dining room did not believe in serving lunch and the gift shop was always closed. It was impossible to express our dissatisfaction to the hotel manager, since she was on the property for maybe 1.8 hours during our entire stay. I recommend vacationers stay away from this hotel, for it is definitely worth paying extra money to stay at a real resort.

“What a swill hole”

Some friends and I stayed at this dump for New Years. By far the worst hotel i've ever stayed in. And I mean worst in every respect....location, amenities, staff....you name it. Nothing was open, the pool was horrible and had a lovely backdrop of a completely gutted wing of the hotel. The beach was also a disgrace. Four lounge chairs complete with bird doody. Bugs crawling through the sand, and an airplane that was destroyed not 40 yards away. They say the hurricane did a job to this place, which apparently it did, but how do you run an operation like this? The little store in the hotel was closed because the person quit. Um what? The one sort of plus was the fact that we did get ourselves a giant suite. Believe it or not it was actually in decent shape. Except for the fact that more then half the lights and all the ceiling fans(3) didnt work. I also heard that 2 floors of the hotel were flooded. We would wake up early and head to the Westin which was real nice and let us use all it's amenities(for a $10 fee). The taxi was $40 round trip to do that each day but well worth it. Then you had to pay another $40 round trip for the evening time because there is nothing to do in and around the Xanadu. No one should ever stay in this place. Avoid it and let it die in peace. No matter how enticing the cheap rates may be. Better off at the Best Western down the block. Stay far far far away.
Thanks for playing.

“Xanadu is a dump”

Xanadu Beach Resort and Marina

We had planned a last minute trip to the Bahamas for New Years. The lack of available hotels led us to the Xanadu. We were skeptical for 3 reasons, it was the only resort/hotel that had availability, the price seemed too good to be true ($130/night), and there were a few reviews on here that warned us to stay away. However there were enough good ones to make us think it might be ok.

First, this place is in the middle of nowhere. All of the nightlife and restaurants are a $20 cab ride away in Lucaya. Second, we get there and all of the bars and restaurants in the hotel were closed. We were starving and just wanted a quick snack. Not possible. Vending machines didnt work, and the little convenience store there was closed permanently. The restaurant did not open until 6pm, so we were stuck ordering Dominos pizza that took 90 min to arrive.

There was a pool bar advertised, but that was closed too and looked like it hadn't been opened in months. We took a walk to the beach and it was the most desolate disgusting beach I've ever seen. There were maybe 10 chaise lounges out there to use, and most were dirty. There were also a ton of bugs and worms crawling around in the sand. Yes the islands were hit hard by the hurricanes, but you go to any of the other resorts and you see no damage, so the Xanadu basically just doesn't want to pay for any repairs.

All in all, I would never stay there again. The rooms, while old, were actually not that bad (besides some shattered glass on the floor that cut my foot!), but not enough to make up for the other lack of amenities. We were expecting a resort, not a roadside motel.

We ended up taking a cab to the Westin resort each day and for $10 they let you use their beach and pool. I would recommend paying the extra $$ and staying there if theres vacancy. Also, dont believe any of the good reviews on here. I don't know what those people are used to, but theres no way you could think this place was nice.

“Do Not Go To This Resort”

Xanadu Beach Resort and Marina

I just got back from staying at the Xanadu Beach Resort on Grand Bahama Island for New Years 2005/2006 and can only say DO NOT STAY AT THIS RESORT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. I booked the stay based upon the information Expedia, Trip Advisor and Orbitz gave me on the property (3 stars, 1st class description) and this was completely inaccurate. This hotel is a complete disaster - significant hurricane damage from Wilma (tennis courts torn apart, no beachside club/bar, a whole side of the resort is blown out - rooms next to the pool). Additionally, on the first night of our stay there was a water main break on the main tower that caused a major flood. Water seeped INTO EVERY ROOM REGARDLESS OF FLOOR and was still wet when we left 3 days later. We are talking about being able to splash in the hallways. It took an entire day to move us to a new room (also with wet carpet, but thankfully not sloshing), and they were putting people in our old flooded room. Even the new room was not clean, had no towels, lights with bulbs, or even a trash can. In addition to the hurricane damage, I heard from locals that the hotel has been going downhill for more than 5 years. They are trying to sell this as a time share and it would be a travesty if anyone bought at this place - either permanently or just to go for a vacation. The people of Grand Bahama are wonderful and there are a ton of other places to stay - best ones seem to be around Port Lucaya, just save yourself a headache and don't go to this one.
